Rosacea

Persistent facial redness, flushing and sensitivity, often with bumps.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the central face. It typically causes flushing, background redness, visible small blood vessels and, in some patients, acne-like bumps.

Symptoms

  • Flushing that comes and goes
  • Persistent redness across cheeks, nose and chin
  • Visible fine blood vessels
  • Papules and pustules without blackheads
  • Burning, stinging or a sensation of tightness
  • Eye irritation in some patients

Common Causes

  • An overactive inflammatory and vascular response
  • Sun exposure and heat
  • Spicy food, hot drinks and alcohol in some people
  • Skin barrier disruption and harsh products
  • Demodex mite overgrowth in some cases

Who May Be Affected

Rosacea is more common in adults from their thirties onwards and often affects people who flush easily.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is clinical, based on the pattern of redness and lesions. The dermatologist will also rule out conditions that can look similar, such as acne or seborrheic dermatitis.

Treatment Options

  • Topical anti-inflammatory therapy
  • Oral medication for inflammatory rosacea
  • Barrier-repair skincare and gentle cleansing
  • Light or laser-based treatment for visible vessels where suitable
  • Trigger identification and daily sun protection

Prevention & Skincare Advice

  • Identify and reduce personal flushing triggers
  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day
  • Avoid alcohol-based toners and abrasive scrubs
  • Keep skincare simple and fragrance-free

When to See a Dermatologist

See a dermatologist if facial redness is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by burning, bumps or eye symptoms.
