Psoriasis

An immune-related condition causing thickened, scaly plaques.

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated condition in which skin cells turn over faster than normal, producing thickened plaques with silvery scale. It commonly affects the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.

Symptoms

  • Well-defined, raised plaques with scale
  • Itching, tightness or soreness
  • Scalp scaling beyond the hairline
  • Nail pitting, ridging or separation
  • Joint pain or stiffness in some patients

Common Causes

  • Immune-mediated inflammation with a genetic component
  • Infections, particularly throat infections
  • Physical trauma to the skin
  • Stress, smoking and alcohol
  • Certain medications

Who May Be Affected

Psoriasis can begin at any age and affects men and women equally. A family history is common.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually clinical. A skin biopsy is occasionally needed, and joint symptoms are assessed because psoriasis can involve the joints.

Treatment Options

  • Topical therapy for localised disease
  • Phototherapy in selected patients
  • Systemic or advanced therapy for extensive disease
  • Scalp-specific formulations
  • Moisturisation and trigger management alongside treatment

Prevention & Skincare Advice

  • Keep skin well moisturised to reduce cracking
  • Manage stress and sleep where possible
  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
  • Treat infections promptly

When to See a Dermatologist

Consult a dermatologist if plaques are spreading, the scalp or nails are involved, or you develop joint pain.
