Ingrown Hair
Hairs curling back into the skin causing bumps and irritation.
What is Ingrown Hair?
An ingrown hair develops when a hair grows back into the skin instead of out of the follicle, producing a tender bump. It is common after shaving, waxing or threading, especially with curly hair.
Symptoms
- Small red or dark bumps in shaved areas
- Tenderness, itching or pus formation
- Visible hair trapped under the surface
- Dark marks after repeated episodes
Common Causes
- Shaving too closely or against the grain
- Waxing, threading and plucking
- Naturally curly or coarse hair
- Dead skin build-up blocking the follicle
- Tight clothing over the area
Who May Be Affected
Ingrown hairs are common on the beard area, neck, underarms, bikini line and legs in anyone who removes hair regularly.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is clinical. The dermatologist also excludes folliculitis and other follicular conditions that can look similar.
Treatment Options
- Topical treatment to reduce inflammation and blockage
- Antibacterial therapy when infection is present
- Laser hair reduction to reduce recurrence in suitable patients
- Guidance on safer hair-removal technique
Prevention & Skincare Advice
- Shave in the direction of hair growth with a sharp blade
- Exfoliate gently between hair-removal sessions
- Avoid tight clothing over affected areas
- Do not dig out trapped hairs
When to See a Dermatologist
Consult a dermatologist if bumps are recurrent, painful, infected, or leaving marks and scarring.
