What is Excessive Sweating?
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating that goes beyond the body's cooling requirement. It commonly affects the palms, soles, underarms and face, and can interfere with work and social life.
Symptoms
- Visible sweating at rest or in cool conditions
- Damp palms that affect writing or handshakes
- Sweat marks on clothing
- Skin maceration or associated odour
Common Causes
- Primary hyperhidrosis with no underlying disease
- Thyroid or hormonal conditions
- Certain medications
- Anxiety-related triggers
- Infections or other systemic causes in generalised sweating
Who May Be Affected
Primary hyperhidrosis often begins in adolescence or early adulthood and may run in families.
Diagnosis
The dermatologist takes a history to separate primary from secondary causes and may advise investigations if a systemic cause is suspected.
Treatment Options
- Prescription antiperspirant preparations
- Oral medication in selected patients
- Iontophoresis for palms and soles
- Injectable treatment for focal sweating where appropriate
- Management of any underlying condition
Prevention & Skincare Advice
- Wear breathable natural fabrics
- Use appropriate antiperspirants at night as advised
- Identify and manage personal triggers
When to See a Dermatologist
See a dermatologist if sweating disrupts daily activities, occurs at night, or has started suddenly in adulthood.
